What our pet parents are saying

Verified customers. Real reviews.

I had an incredible experience with Pettable. I had just moved and was looking for a new therapist, but knew an ESA would really help me with the transition, so I came to Pettable to get documentation so I didn’t have to wait months to get approval from my landlord to bring a pet home. The process was straightforward, timely, and made me feel so valid in my journey. Now I am raising a puppy and never been happier and healthier! I can’t recommend Pettable enough!

What Is A Psychiatric Service Dog?

A psychiatric service dog is very similar to an ESA in that they help alleviate symptoms of a person's disability. Psychiatric service dogs and service animals are accepted on all airlines (subject to a few rules and with complete paperwork), in all housing units, and in all public places.

Psychiatric service dogs and service animals are different from an animal that provides emotional support in that they are trained to do specific tasks to help their handler. Interestingly, while the standards for the dogs are different, the list of mental and emotional disabilities that qualify for a psychiatric service animal is exactly the same as the list for qualifying for an ESA.

Who Qualifies For A Psychiatric Service Dog?

To qualify for a PSD, you must have a psychological condition or mental illness (diagnosed by a licensed professional) for which your animal provides support and comfort. Any mental or emotional disability that qualifies for an ESA can qualify for a psychiatric service animal. Some mental illnesses that can benefit from a PSD include:

This includes:
- Depression
- Anxiety
- Phobias
- Personality Disorders
- Bipolar Disorder
- ADHD
- Schizophrenia

The therapeutic effects dogs can have on humans have been heavily researched, and the impacts they can have on mental health, well-being, and longevity are dramatic. 74% of pet owners report mental health improvements due to interactions with their animals, and studies have shown that service animal companionship can effectively treat mental disorders like PTSD.

Psychiatric Service Dog vs. Emotional Support Dog?

An emotional support animal is very similar to a psychiatric service animal in that they both help relieve symptoms of a mental or emotional disability. The process for qualifying for an ESA or PSA is exactly the same.

A psychiatric service dog is pretty identical to an emotional support dog in that they both help relieve symptoms of a mental or emotional disability. The evaluation and the process to qualify for an emotional support dog or psychiatric service dog is identical.
The big difference between a Psychiatric Service Dog and Emotional Support Dog is the standard of training they need to meet. An emotional support dog does not need to meet any training or behavioral standards. A Psychiatric Service Dog on the other hand needs to meet the following criteria:

1. Behave well in public
This means they don't jump on other people, chase other dogs, pee where they're not supposed to, excessively bark, and generally don't disturb others and stick by your side when out.

2. Trained in a task that alleviates a symptom of your mental or emotional disability
This can be any tasks that helps your disability in some way, whether reducing your anxiety, relieving your stress, or a variety of other tasks.
