Emotional Support Animals in Ohio

Anyone with an emotional or mental disability may be eligible for an emotional support animal in Ohio.

Ohio acknowledges the challenges of mental health struggles and the benefits for many of having an emotional support animal as part of a treatment plan. Because of this, they have approachable laws and policies in place to protect the rights of emotional support animals and their owners.

ESA Laws in Ohio

Federal laws with respect to emotional support animals are also in force in Ohio. The state also fines any individual who falsely claims to have an assistance animal.

On the rest of the page, we'll dive deeper into specific Ohio laws regarding housing, travel, employment, and public access for ESAs. Let's explore all of your benefits, protections, and rights as owner of an emotional support animal in Ohio.

Ohio ESA Housing Laws

Ohio follows the federal Fair Housing Act (FHA), which states that landlords must accommodate emotional support animals as long as the requested accommodation is within reason, and the tenant can provide a valid ESA letter. This law includes housing providers that otherwise enforce a "no pets" policy.

This law also requires landlords not to charge any extra fees for living with an assistance animal, nor impose any weight or breed restrictions on the animal. They can, however, refuse to accommodate an animal if it poses a direct threat or causes damage to the property.

Ohio Fair Housing & Employment Act

At this time, there is no law in Ohio requiring employers to accommodate an emotional support animal. However, under the Americans with Disabilities Act, they must not discriminate against an employee for their disability and are required to accept trained service dogs or psychiatric service dogs.

Some employers may be lenient in this regard. If you feel you'd benefit from your ESA accompanying you to work, bring your ESA letter and ask your HR team if you could work something out together.

How Do You Qualify for an Emotional Support Animal in Ohio?

To get an emotional support animal (ESA) in Ohio, you must have a qualifying mental health or emotional disorder that is alleviated by the presence of your pet. Although it doesn’t come with all the perks of a psychiatric service dog (PSD), owning an ESA can make a significant difference in a disabled person’s life. Any mental health condition may qualify, but an example of potential qualifying mental health conditions include:

  • Depression
  • Anxiety or panic disorder
  • Bipolar disorder
  • Post-traumatic stress disorder
  • Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD)
  • Schizophrenia

However, to get your ESA letter in Ohio, you’ll need to be evaluated by a licensed mental health professional (LMHP) certified specifically in the Buckeye State. That letter must include the provider’s name, license number, official letterhead, diagnosis, and the symptoms your ESA alleviates.

Benefits of an Emotional Support Animal for Ohio Residents

They Provide Support for Your Mental Health

If you’ve been struggling with mental health challenges, an ESA can make a world of difference. Pet lovers know how their animals’ love and affection can positively impact their lives, and that includes helping them through bouts of depression, anxiety, and excessive stress.

They Give You a Healthy Routine

When you have a mental health disorder, motivation can be a major struggle. Taking care of an ESA can give you a routine to follow, with activities such as a daily walk with your dog, cleaning the cage for your hamster, or feeding your slithering snake. Your ESA depends on you — and that can provide you with all the motivation you need.

You Can Live Anywhere With Your ESA

When you have an official ESA letter, your assistance animal can double as your roommate. Not only can an ESA bypass “no pet” policies, but your ESA letter also compels landlords to waive any pet-related fees. As long as you and your animal behave, you’ll be able to enjoy movie nights and morning snuggles with your ESA.

How to Get a Psychiatric Service Dog in Ohio

If you think a psychiatric service dog (PSD) will benefit your life even more than an ESA, Pettable has you covered. First, complete our online PSD assessment and make a telehealth appointment with one of our Ohio-certified LMHPs. Next, your assistance animal needs to learn how to perform tasks specific to your mental health diagnosis, so enroll in Pettable’s convenient and trusted online PSD training program. The flexibility of our training program fits your needs and schedule, so you and your canine companion can start accompanying you wherever you need them. We’ll even issue you a PSD letter after your dog is fully trained, so there’s no doubt your furry friend is a qualified service dog.

What our pet parents are saying

Verified customers. Real reviews.
An image of Maddee W and her dog
I had an incredible experience with Pettable. I had just moved and was looking for a new therapist, but knew an ESA would really help me with the transition, so I came to Pettable to get documentation so I didn’t have to wait months to get approval from my landlord to bring a pet home. The process was straightforward, timely, and made me feel so valid in my journey. Now I am raising a puppy and never been happier and healthier! I can’t recommend Pettable enough!
