To obtain an ESA letter, you must first consult with a licensed mental health professional (LMHP) who is able to practice in your state. They can assess whether or not an emotional support animal would be a helpful component of your treatment plan.
Fortunately, the availability of telemedicine has made this process easier than ever. You can now speak with an LMHP online to qualify for an ESA letter—without ever having to wait in any long lines, or even leave the comfort of your home!

Anyone with an emotional or mental disability may be eligible for an emotional support animal in Ohio.
Ohio acknowledges the challenges of mental health struggles and the benefits for many of having an emotional support animal as part of a treatment plan. Because of this, they have approachable laws and policies in place to protect the rights of emotional support animals and their owners.
Federal laws with respect to emotional support animals are also in force in Ohio. The state also fines any individual who falsely claims to have an assistance animal.
On the rest of the page, we'll dive deeper into specific Ohio laws regarding housing, travel, employment, and public access for ESAs. Let's explore all of your benefits, protections, and rights as owner of an emotional support animal in Ohio.
Ohio follows the federal Fair Housing Act (FHA), which states that landlords must accommodate emotional support animals and service animals—as long as the requested accommodation is within reason, and the tenant can provide a valid ESA or PSD letter. This law includes housing providers that otherwise enforce a "no pets" policy.
This law also requires landlords not to charge any extra fees for living with an assistance animal, nor impose any weight or breed restrictions on the animal. They can, however, refuse to accommodate an animal if it poses a direct threat or causes damage to the property.
At this time, there is no law in Ohio requiring employers to accommodate an emotional support animal. However, under the Americans with Disabilities Act, they must not discriminate against an employee for their disability.
Some employers may be lenient in this regard. If you feel you'd benefit from your ESA accompanying you to work, bring your ESA letter and ask your HR team if you could work something out together.
If you think you may qualify for an ESA in Ohio, you'll need to connect with a mental health professional licensed in your state, first. They can evaluate your mental health situation and symptoms and determine if you are, in fact, eligible for an emotional support animal as part of your treatment plan.
At Pettable, we've made it convenient for your to work through our telehealth marketplace and be matched with a vetted, licensed mental health professional with experience in mental health evaluations for assistance animals.
